'English Spoken' is a live radioplay performance made by Bertin & Jana. It was first presented in Extrapool, Nijmegen in 2005 and published on the Audiotoop CD and Booklet by Knust/Extrapool.

"...On this 'Digitally Distorted Miniatures' he has ten short tracks, somewhere between one and three or so minutes, of highly fucked up music. Remixes of reggae tunes, such as 'Button Up Remix' or ' Treveling emix' but just with likewise great easy he digitally deconstructs improv music or noise, in the heavy opening piece 'Immaculate Noise'. Given the speed of the tracks and the energy by which this floats by, this is certainly a well-done and well-varied release, taking the piss out of pop music and replacing the common-grounds of verse, break and bridge (or what else have you in pop music) by digital cuts and other mayhem. ... Bertin's short digital miniatures have an impressionistic approach and contain a strong feeling for melody, story and time. Bertin build up these four pieces layer by layer, using advanced computing and improvised voice, guitar and editing. Because of it's playful nature, you could easily imagine this 7" being the soundtrack for a children's book.

... Working behind the alias (none), Bertin is exploring the world of electronic lo-fi. Armed with an audio-mixer and effect processors, he has shifted his focus from his former acoustic sound to a more electronic ambient. The combination of noisy high pitched feedback and close recorded spoken word, becomes strangely natural. The tracks of the first (none)-demo where recorded on an analogue 4-track tape recorder and mixed real time to the digital master. On stage, (none) is all work and no play. (Which makes (none) a dull boy).

The Video Dead

A still taken from the 1984 movie 'The Video Dead' shows a girl brushing her teeth while looking in the mirror. In this scene she is in a shock because of occurring events (zombies and such). The repetitive movement of the brushing together with the montage, accompanied music score and her expression causes a dramatic effect.
More important, the actress is in fact not looking in a mirror but she is looking straight in the lens of the camera. The camera can take many forms and the viewer transforms with it. And because she is looking at herself, the audience members have not transformed in a mirror but in fact transformed into the character.

The Drawing is made out of approx. 25000 squares (like pixels) drawn with feltpointed markers.

2000 Videoprojecties in de openbare ruimte

In het kader van galerie Sign’s videoweek zijn de kunstenaars Bertin van Vliet, Elmar Kuiper en Wouter Jansen op pad gegaan om de Groninger binnenstad te verfraaien met onverwachte projecties. In korte sessies werden filmloops en filmfragmenten vanuit het open dak van een 2-cv vertoont. Op deze wijze worden toevallige passanten totaal verrast met onverwachte gebeurtenissen.

Wildbeamen is een uitvinding van Jeroen Kooijmans die het zelf video-graffiti noemt. De voorstellingen spelen in op de atmosfeer van nachtelijke openbare ruimte. Zo wordt er een wildplassende reus van maar liefst vier meter hoog op verschillende locaties geprojecteerd. Voor de projecties worden korte filmfragmenten en filmloops verzameld en gemaakt door de beeldend kunstenaars.

In augustus was een deel van de" wildbeam-werken" te zien zijn tijdens BAKLICHT BUITEN openlucht festival in Arnhem, meer info klik hier.

'Kunstmatig' was een groepstentoonstelling georganiseerd door o.a. Bertin van Vliet. Het vond plaats in De Bamshoeve, een oud industrieel pand in Enschede. De twee verdiepingen werden voor de gelegenheid omgedoopt tot Daglicht en Kunstlicht. Deelnemende kunstenaars (allemaal vers van de academie) waren o.a. Jaap Schuurman (installatie), Simone Schwering (fotografie), Gert jan Scholte Albers (schilderij met kaarslicht), Bertin van Vliet (installaties) en vele anderen.

Het idee van Kunstmatig was om gedurende 2 weken op lokatie te werken en om nieuw werk te creeren.

Inside the floating newspaper cubicle one could hear; "Chocolate, chocolate! You don't understand, he like's to chase skunks in the woods. And when he finds them, he tries to mate with them. And then they spray him, and then he really gets turned on" repeated over and over again.

Main character The Beef Captain (based on Don van Vliet's Captain Beefheart ) meets a snail, then a girl, then an alien from the planet BMX and finally the super villain 'The Camera Toaster Man' disguised as a clerk from a 'Super'market.

1997 science fiction movie

In 1997 we started making a science fiction film with the equipment from the art academy. We shot several scene's before we even wrote a plot. For a long time the material (shot on SVHS and 8mm) was on the shelf.

Het Werkt

'Het Werkt' was an artist cooperation between Bertin van Vliet, Gert Jan Scholte Albers and Jaap Schuurman. Inspired by Cobra and De Ploeg. Het Werkt manifested itself as a group exhibition and a few minor edition, xerox-copied, publications containing excerpts from the artists sketchbooks.

The exhibition was held in an abandonned factory called 'De Bamshoeve'. The complex was in use by artist as a work and project space. In May 2000 the next-door warehouse of S.E. Fireworks, blew up(!). Destroying not only the Bamshoeve complex and it's surroundings but also my complete residential area. 21 people got killed.

1997 CDR doggy music

Recorded in five days on a digital multi-track recorder, with hardly any recording experience at all. One thing that went through our young adolescent minds was the fact we had better equipment than Elvis. Another concept we thought of was, we should use crappy microphones to make it sound less clean. And while we're at it. Why don't you sit in the hallway and sing through the closed door. What do you mean, you can't hear the beat! How we faired the digital age! The result is an album of a beginning band recording every idea good or bad.

1996 - 1999

PET OR LUAU was a lo-fi recording group located in Enschede in the mid- and late ninetees. Gert Jan Scholte Albers, Jaap Schuurman and Bertin van Vliet met at school in 1992. Two years later they went to the most freeform and independed minded art academy in The Netherlands, the AKI, to study autonomic art. In the summer of 1996 Bertin and Jaap spend a week BBQing and recording improvisations on a 4-track taperecorder. Most recordings where made outside in the garden. The mainly distorted accoustic guitars, backwards percussion and pitched voices all mixed with birds singing in the background, created a rather unique sound. Gert Jan teamed up with his kazoo and multi-effects and "Twiggy, Pet or Luau" was born.

Other band members where Patrick Finke (bass), Rik Simon (samples), Nils Amann (percussion), and cartoonist Witte Wartena (who played water(!) on the early recordings). Afterschool activity in those days was home-recording and experimenting with guitars, casio keyboards, tapes and percussion instruments (they also made low budget films and got their clothing and instruments from a deserted second hand store.) The name Pet or Luau is taken from the Jay Leno show. Where Leno made a joke about an advertisement about puppies. Pet or luau did a number of live concerts on houseparties, festivals, café "Swartjes" and offcourse at the AKI. They were compaired with Can, Beck, Ween and Tocotronic. The band broke up in 1998. Bertin and Rik went on as Prank Aggressor. Jaap and Nils joined forces as Derek & Chimpanski. Gert Jan kept painting most dedicatedly.
